What Are Reverse Osmosis Water Filters?
In the world of water filtration, there are many different kinds of systems available. One of the most sophisticated types are the reverse osmosis water filters. According to Princeton University, reverse osmosis is a way of creating purified water. In scientific terms, a solvent is passed through a membrane that is semipermeable, in a direction opposite of that of osmosis when put under hydrostatic pressure higher than the osmosis pressure. Fortunately, you don't need to understand the chemistry to make good use of these filters.
General Electric makes reverse osmosis filters for refrigerators and sinks. Many refrigerators have water and ice dispensers, and of course you want clean water. You can buy a filter of this type that easily fits into your refrigerator's water dispenser and is easy to change. Culligan is another company that makes reverse osmosis filtration systems. These filters can remove almost all traces of bacteria, sediment, minerals and other contaminants from your water. While minerals may not sound dangerous, they can cause the problem of hard water which is bad for your pipes, leaves grime on your tub and may not taste good.
When choosing a filtration system for your home, consider your family's needs. If you want a system that takes care of your entire house, you can have one hooked up, these are called point of entry systems. Many people who get their water from wells use reverse osmosis point of entry (or whole house) filtrations systems. You can also get point of use systems, which are the ones that are used at your sink, or in your shower rather than throughout the entire home. It just depends on how much water purification you need.
Reverse osmosis water filters represent some of the most technologically advanced filtration systems, however they are not the only ones. There are actually ultraviolet or UV purification systems that use light to kill all bacteria and living organisms in water. These UV systems are often utilized in third world countries, especially in hotels where tourists stay. While you can get UV systems for your home, they are more expensive than some of your other filtration options.
